New Name, Same Location: Oxnard Beach Park Renamed ‘olołkoy Beach Park after the Chumash name for dolphin


Many are asking about the recent name change for Oxnard Beach Park now called ‘olołkoy Beach Park.


Per a news story released by KEYT News, back in October the park is one of many popular places in Ventura that will receive a Chumash name change! The name 'olołkoy with the lower case "o" means dolphin.


"We are literally making history today here in Oxnard and you are all part of it," said community member Manuel Herrera who pitched the idea to the late Carmen Ramirez and then city leaders.

Chumash Elders said they have many languages and have a number of ways to pronounce 'olołkoy.


The Oxnard Jazz Festival scheduled for September 13-15, 2024, will continue to bring is signature brand of fun, food and music to this park, a place we have called home for 7 years.
